Traditional Uses: Sarsaparilla has been used by Indigenous peoples in Central and South America for purifying the blood, treating skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema, and relieving joint pain from arthritis or rheumatism. It was also used as a general tonic to boost strength, stamina, and libido, as well as a remedy for colds, fever, and sexual health issues. In 19th-century Western herbal medicine, it gained popularity as a treatment for syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections due to its believed detoxifying properties. Sarsaparilla root was also a key ingredient in old-fashioned root beer, appreciated not just for flavor but for its health-promoting effects.
